                                 Famous festival of Gilgit Baltistan

 How and when people of Baltistan celebrate thier New Year

   Gilgit Baltistan is astonishingly known by their unique culture and tradition.Mayfang is one of the extra ordinary festival that people use to celebrate with great excitement.

In Balti language "Mayfung" implies celebration of waving fire and light around evening time. Local people commended the day the evening of Dec 21 to mark the end of the longest evening of the year and beginning of the New Year.After the dimness fell on Dec 21, individuals began the celebrations in each village of Baltistan division.




As per the culture, individuals accumulated at a mountain, holding consuming wood in the air and singing melodies. Then they began walking toward their particular towns holding the fire sticks up high and singing conventional tunes. Additionally individuals assembled in an open place after the murkiness fell, waved lights in their hands, got fire going balls and moved on traditional Balti folk music.They lit huge fires and twirled fireballs to commend the celebration.The people used to  celebrate this festival when temperatures decreased to  -16 to -20 centigrade. Candles were lit at roof of houses.





   There are different theory and perspectives related to this  celebration. As per one fantasy, the celebration is held to commend end of harsh wather of winter and beginning of New Year.According to another perspective the celebration saved them from  natural disasters. They accept that flames guard against incidents and shield them from catastrophic events.

    The Skardu city was lit with candles and huge fires and individuals wished each other blissful 'Losar' the Balti New Year on 21st of December.
